How to Perform Logistic Regression in Excel

Logistic regression is a statistical technique used for binary classification tasks. It is used when dependent variable has two possible values such as 0 and 1. For example : success/failure, pass/fail etc. In short, it predicts binary dependent variable based on one or more independent variables.

In this article, we will be calculating logistic regression in Excel to check whether the student was admitted (1) or not admitted (0) into graduate school based on the following variables.

gre : Score on the GRE test
gpa : GPA grades
rank1 – rank3 : Prestige of the undergraduate institution (rank 1 being the highest prestige). A student not ranking in the top 1-3 positions means belonging to the lowest prestige undergraduate institution.

The raw data looks like the image shown below. We have 397 observations and 5 independent variables in our dataset. Data are in range A2:F398 in Excel. admit is a dependent variable in this case and the remaining variables are independent variables.
